Day 22: Kimchi Museum!
Dear friends,
it has been three weeks since I arrived in Korea. Well, I could summarize this period as a really successful vegan Korean experience! Seriously, Korean cuisine surprised me most! I never before have enjoyed local cuisine as much as in Korea. Korean cuisine amazes me everyday, for instance lately I discovered fantastic, brilliantly delicious seaweed with sesame! If you mix it with rice and add some bean sprouts, chopped cucumber, chili sauce you have a good base for BiBimBap! You can use these seaweed for salad as well.
Regarding my activities here, last week I moved a bit in a rut, even so I have enough time for taking photos, translations and watching The IT Crowd (btw, in the meantime I watched two good movies “Caramel” by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki and “Deep Red” by Dario Argento, strongly recommend them!).
On the last weekend I planned to hitchhike to Geojedo Island, but the weather damped down my enthusiasm and I decided to stay in Busan. I went to Samgwangsa Buddhist Temple which is one of the most significant Buddhist centres in Busan. The Samgwansa Temple was build relatively not so long time ago, in 1968; additionally apart from being a place for praying wishes to Avalokitesvara (the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy), it also organizes variety of workshops such as Chinese classes, calligraphy classes or tea ceremony group.
I am not a Buddhist, but when I went inside and saw all these women praying and singing mantras I decided to try meditation. Well, paying attention to one action is not probably one of my strong points, thus I didn’t meditate too long. However observing people around and Buddha statues looking at me disposed me very peacefully. I am going to back there soon, as well as go to other Busan’s Buddhist temples.
After visiting temple I set off to Children’s Grand Park, where you can enjoy nice amusement park hidden in greenery (yeah, a lot of wild-looking greenery around), take photo with statue of monkey disguised as a sausage or just have a nice walk around reservoir. Unfortunately the amusement park was closed, thus I must back there in the nearest future:)
Volunteer project goes well, children are eager to learn English and I try to act seriously when they are around, but as you know, I am probably more childish than children their selves haha!
My main hobby here is taking photos of outstanding neighborhood (results below) that does not consist of overwhelming, tall blocks of flats only. Nope, there are tiny, colorful houses just at the foot of them. I may be wrong, but these houses resemble slums, and that makes interesting architectural contrast in Busan.
The latest news... in Seoul there is Kimchi Museum! Yes, unique place that provides good source of information about preparing, storing and eating kimchi, presents many kinds of this characteristic Korean food, in addition it shows history of kimchi (including “The Exhibition of Ancient Books about Kimchi History” or “The Models of Kimchi in Each Period”). It will be museum of my life! Look forward to go there....
